Chipola grad James “Tommy” Barfield now heads District 3

James “Tommy” Barfield graduated from Chipley High School, Chipola Junior College, and the University of Florida. He holds an engineering degree from UF, and is a registered professional engineer. He has risen through the ranks of the Florida DOT, to become Secretary of District 3.
He first went to work for the DOT in 1986 as an engineer trainee. He was eventually promoted to Director of Transportation Development, which deals with roads planning and production. Last week he was again promoted to Secretary for District 3.
Some of the local projects which are in development include the widening of State Roads 77, 79, and 231, and maybe an extension of U.S. 231. “Our mission is to create transportation systems that fulfill the needs of the citizens of this district.
Tommy Barfield lives in Marianna with his wife Nan and their two sons, Jamie and Cody. He is the son-in-law of Mary Melvin of Marianna.
