The Future of Diabetes is in Your Hands during American Diabetes Month®

JACKSON COUNTY, FLORIDA. Local residents can become a part of the Stop Diabetes! movement by learning more about diabetes. Attend the Diabetes Education Lunch and Learn sponsored by the Jackson County Health Department Closing the Gap, Tobacco Prevention, and Diabetes Self-Management Education Program to be held at the Jackson County Agriculture Complex conference center November 30, 2010 from 12:00 until 1:00 p.m.

Nearly 24 million children and adults in the U.S. have diabetes and an additional 57 million people are at high risk for developing type 2 diabetes.

The American Diabetes Association is encouraging the public to take action against this devastating disease by asking “How will you Stop Diabetes? The future is in your hands.”

There are plenty of ways you can become involved the Stop Diabetes movement. There is no time to waste. Diabetes is a disease with deadly consequences. Drastic action is needed. From everyone.
Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes.
In type 2 diabetes, either the body does not produce enough insulin or the cells ignore the insulin. Insulin is necessary for the body to be able to use glucose for energy. When you eat food, the body breaks down all of the sugars and starches into glucose, which is the basic fuel for the cells in the body. Insulin takes the sugar from the blood into the cells.
When glucose builds up in the blood instead of going into cells, it can cause two problems:
· Right away, your cells may be starved for energy.
· Over time, high blood glucose levels may hurt your eyes, kidneys, nerves or heart.
Some groups have a higher risk for developing type 2 diabetes than others. Type 2 diabetes is more common in African Americans, Latinos, Native Americans, and Asian Americans/Pacific Islanders, as well as the aged population.
