Marianna Reopens Possibility of Purchase of City Electrical System From Florida Public Utilities


At Tuesday’s City Commission meeting, City Attorney Frank Bondurant presented an update on the status of the electrical franchise agreement with Florida Public Utilities. As specified in the renewal of the franchise contract, FPU was required to implement a commercial rate structure which provided reduced rates of off peak demand periods by February 17, 2011. This is a common practice which gives cost reductions to large industrial consumers for the power they use during low demand periods, such as during the evenings. It is believed that the absence of this rate structure provision will impede future industrial development opportunities within the FPU service area.
