CHIPOLA LADY INDIANS DOMINATE IN FIRST ROUND IN NATIONAL TOURNEY

SALINA, KS – The Chipola College Lady Indians defeated the Sheridan College (WY) “Lady Generals”, 86-47, in their first round game in the National Junior College Athletic Association Women’s Basketball Tournament on Wednesday, March 18, in the Bicentennial Center in Salina, Kansas. WBCA All American Latoya Williams led Chipola with 22 points and 9 rebounds. Lenita Sanford added 16 points and led in rebounds with 14. Marneisha Hall scored 12. Sequoyah Griffin contributed 8 to the win.
Chipola led the tournament’s first round defensive stats with the least amount of points allowed during their game (47), an 80% defensive rebound average and 57 defensive stops. The Lady Indians dominated each half outscoring the Lady Generals almost two to one with 23-40 in the first half and 24-46 in the second half. The ladies held the NJCAA leading scorer Sheridan’s Taynee Robinson to half of her season average with only 15 points. Sheridan’s Mandy Mullock also ranked in the NJCAA poll with an average of 8.8 rebounds per game was held to 5 in the Chipola game. Chipola’s Williams is also ranked sixteenth nationally with an average of 10 rebounds per game.
Chipola’s overall record stands at (28 – 5). The Lady Indians advance to the second round and will play Walters State Community College from Morristown, TN at 8 p.m. CST on Thursday.
