The Fitness Center Strikes Out Against Cancer

The Fitness Center, located on Highway 90 East of Marianna, will present a FREE educational seminar program called You Don’t Need Another Stroke or a Future Heart Attack to educate stroke survivors, family members and caregivers about how to help protect against a future stroke or heart attack. The seminar will be presented by Robert Hoff, M.D. on Monday, March 2, 2009 at 7PM at the Fitness Center of Marianna, 4966 Hwy 90 E. Phone Number 526-5225.

According to the American Heart Association, there are approximately 5.5 million stroke survivors in the United States today. People who have had a stroke face up to a 9 times greater risk of having another stroke and are at more than double the risk of having a heart attack versus the general population.

The seminar includes an educational video featuring Galen Vincent Henderson, M.D.*, Director of the Division of Critical Care and Emergency Neurology and Director of Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit at Brigham Women’s Hospital, a teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School in Boston. In the video, Dr. Henderson addresses:

• The definition and causes of strokes
• Why an individual who has had a stroke is at an increased risk of having a future stroke or heart attack
• Lifestyle changes that a patient can make after experiencing a stroke
• The importance of therapy, support groups and taking the appropriate medication
The video also educates stroke survivors about the importance of post-stroke therapy. Occupational therapy, physical therapy and speech therapy can help a stroke patient dramatically recover.

The goal of the video is to help stroke victims become more informed about their recovery so they can cope with their post-stroke life with a more positive attitude.

The You Don’t Need Another Stroke or a Future Heart Attack seminar will be developed by the Bristol-Myers Squibb/Sanofi Pharmaceuticals Partnership. For more information about the program, please contact The Fitness Center at 526-2466.
