Unidentified Body Found At Springhill Land Fill

White “John Doe” male is discovered in mountain of refuse by workers.
By Sid Riley
Sheriff Lou Roberts, Chief Deputy Don Branch, and JCSO investigators earned their pay on Sunday. The Springhill Land Fill at Campbellton is not a pleasant place to visit, especially after the heavy rains we have had during the past week.
However, duty called them to the scene of the discovery of the body of a white male which apparently had been delivered to the land fill in one of the many large garbage carriers which arrive at the land fill each day. These carriers come from cities throughout the panhandle and even from adjoining states. It will be very difficult for investigators to determine which of these trucks delivered the body.
“We are waiting for the medical examiner’s report”, explained Chief Deputy Branch. “Hopefully his report will let us know more about the cause of death, and if any foul play was involved. Also we hope his work will assist us in identification of the body.”
“At the same time, we are watching carefully for any missing persons reports anywhere in the southeast, ” Branch continued. “With this being the Memorial Day weekend, we have many visitors from outside the area, and this individual may be a visitor. We are hoping for someone, somewhere to file a missing persons report which may help in identification of this body.”
When this author asked him if he managed to get his boots clean after trudging through muddy garbage on Sunday, Branch responded, “You gotta’ do what you gotta’ do sometimes. The boots were hopeless, I just threw them away.”
