M.R. Stokes, Lifelong Jackson County Educator Will Be Missed

He touched the lives of many…

By Sid Riley

He was a quiet, sincere, hard working, intelligent, Christian man who always looked after the interest of those around him. M. R. Stokes spent his entire life in the service of others. From serving his nation as a soldier during WW II, to serving the children and parents of children in Jackson County for thirty-five years as a teacher, coach, and principal, to serving his God through his active membership in the First Methodist Church in Marianna, to serving his loving family as a loving father and mentor. He performed all of those important tasks with his unique style of skill and dignity.

After he retired from the school system in 1986, he continued to mentor our youth through his work with Habitat for Humanities and his church activities. M.R. Stokes was preceded in death by his wife Willa Dean. His children, grandchildren, and other family members will dearly miss the guidance and wisdom with which he guided his family. Our community will miss the contributions he always provided when asked, and volunteered when not asked.

M.R. Stokes was laid to rest on Saturday, January 23rd at Pinecrest Memorial Gardens. He was given full military honors by Sneads American Legion, and given full personal honors by those in Jackson County who were privileged to know him.
