Grand Ridge Man Commits Suicide As Deputies Knock On Door

Last Thursday morning forty nine year old Gary Gillis, who resided in Grand Ridge was being served an arrest warrant for burglary, and grand theft of a firearm, by Deputy Jim Hamilton of the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office. He was greeted at the door by a female friend of Gillis and while they were talking they heard a single shot come from a bedroom area.

Hamilton summoned back up support, and numerous officers responded, including Burt McAlpin from the Sneads Police Department. Unable to get any response to their calls, an emergency response team entered in SWAT formation. They found Gillis dead in the bedroom apparently from a self inflicted gunshot. A FDLE mobile lab unit was summoned from Pensacola to process the scene.
