“Peaceful Cottage” … or, “Dove Cote Day School

A Place To Give Your Child A Wonderful Beginning To Their Education
By: Sid Riley
“Children thrive in a loving, structured and creative environment”. These were among the first words spoken by Suzanne Owens in this interview. She is one of the owners of Dove Cote Day School, located just north of downtown Marianna on Green Street. “We work to develop preschoolers in their academic skills, social skills, and moral development,” she continued.
Dove Cote Day School was opened in 2000 by Wayne and Frankie Stewart. In 2002 Wayne Stewart unfortunately died. In order to keep the school in operation, Terry and Suzanne Owens, (Suzanne is Wayne and Frankie’s daughter), returned to Marianna to help with the operation of the school. They are now starting their tenth year of operation for the facility.
Dove Cote is a Christian based, non-denominational, pre-school for children ages 3-5. They offer one class of ten students for three year olds, and two classrooms of twelve for children ages four and five. Classes are conducted during the morning hours, with afternoon extended care available if needed. There are four scheduled pick-up times each day for the convenience of working parents.
Students are given opportunities for artistic expression, beginning reading, writing, and math skills development, basic bible stories, field trips, special parties, and a wide variety of programs. “At present the children are excited because we planted a small garden and have all watched it grow. We now have some fine watermelons which are giving the children a lot of excitement,” Owens stated.
“We and our staff develop a relationship with the child and his entire family, this makes our time with the child more effective and relative to the child’s needs”, Suzanne stated. “My parents believed children are a special gift from God. It was their vision to share with parents the joys of loving, guiding, and educating their children, in a Christian environment. They knew the importance of nurturing core beliefs such as respect for God, family, and country. Having respect for themselves, others, and for those in authority are also key themes they believed in. Terry and I feel blessed to have the opportunity to continue the vision my parents began. We at Dove Cote especially want to thank the local community for all the great support and assistance we have been provided during our first ten years of operation.”
When asked how the name “Dove Cote” was determined, Suzanne stated that the well known artist Tasha Tudor has a lovely painting titled “Dove Cote”, which means “Peaceful Cottage”. This name is very appropriate for this Day School….even when the three year olds are romping.
